Grandmother found dead with head in jaws of 23ft python (2025)

This is the horrifying moment a grandmother was found dead with her head in the jaws of a giant python after being pounced upon in her own garden in Indonesia.

Wa Siti, 55, was jumped upon by the 23ft reptile as she collected vegetables inSouth East Sulawesi.

Her worried son La Faru went looking for her when she failed to return home on April 9, only to discover her being devoured by a snake.

Footage shows neighbours holding their torches and machetes as they grappled with the snake in the tall grass.

The furious locals hacked the serpent to death with their tools, but Wa Siti tragically could not be saved.

Her head was already in the snake's mouth and her face was covered in slime when they pulled her out.

La Farulet out terrified screams when he found his mother being swallowed.

'They slashed the snake's head and immediately evacuated the victim,' police inspector One Hardi said.

The inspector said La Faru had been puzzled when his mother failed to return home, going on to search their gardens and a nearby forest.

'When he went to the garden, La Faru found a basket that was usually used.

'Feeling that something was odd, La Faru then called his other relatives.

'They only found the victim's basket, which she used to gather vegetables, so they immediately searched the garden.

'They found their mother with the snake wrapped around her, and her head in the snake's mouth. The victim was already dead.'

Neighbours helped the grieving family carry Wa Siti back to the village for a funeral.

She was laid to rest the next day, on April 10.

Devastated Saimin, another of the victim's children, called relatives to help find his mother when he noticed her basket.

He said: 'I was always worried about her working on the farm. I have seen big snakes before. She had worked on the farm since she was a little girl, so she was not afraid.

'She would always have her basket with her, so I knew something was wrong.'

The incident was only the latest in a string of similar attacks, with police warning locals to take particular care in areas frequented by snakes

Officials have now warned residents to beware of further snake attacks in the Buton Regency of South East Sulawesi.

Indonesia has a large population of pythons living in its lush forests. The plentiful sources of food have allowed them to grow particularly large.

However, increasing urbanisation and the rise in palm oil farms and rubber plantations has lead to increasing conflict with humans.

Earlier this month, a missing woman in South Sulawesi was found swallowed whole inside the body of a huge python.

The anxious family found the bulging 26ft reptile in a patch of dense vegetation on April 1 and slashed it open to find 66-year-old Hasia.

The snake is believed to have pounced from the tall grass as she was walking home from work.

Hasia battled to escape from its grip, but was squeezed to death while being swallowed whole, it was reported locally.

Her son, Nurdin, said the worried family launched a search when night fell and the elderly villager still hadn't returned.

They scoured the area before stumbling upon the snake at around 9pm.

They cut the reptile open and found Hasia's body in its stomach.

Hasia, another grandmother, was found in the stomach of another snake earlier in April

Horrified Nurdin said: 'At first we were worried because she didn't come home, even in the afternoon.

'We were concerned she had become lost or injured herself at work.

'Then we looked for her in the plantation until around 9 pm, when we found a large python lying still on the grass.

'This was devastating. I know it was a painful death for my mother.

'Even though the snake is dead, it is no consolation. It will never bring her back. Now, we are saying prayers for her to be at peace.'
